Istanbul is the centre of the Turkish shipbuilding industry, and its influence extends far into the neighbouring regions. Some 75 % of Turkey's international trade is managed from here. Turkey is also the link between Europe, the Mediterranean countries, the Near and Middle East, and countries bordering on the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Today Turkey represents the centre of the upcoming shipbuilding regions in Southeast Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. Istanbul has good trade relations in the shipbuilding sector with Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Romania and Russia.

“SMM Istanbul demonstrates the international reputation that the Turkish shipbuilding industry has established for timely delivery, production quality and consequent customer satisfaction. We at Çelik Tekne Shipyard wish to voice our great satisfaction that the SMM Istanbul is to take place in the European Capital of Culture 2010.”
Serdar Çuha, Sales and Marketing Department of the Tuzla Shipyard

Bülend Engin, Managing Director İçdaş Shipyard
“This trade fair will greatly advance penetration of new markets by the leading light of the Turkish economy - the shipbuilding industry. In the name of İçdaş Shipyard we wish to thank those who have launched this trade fair, and we would also like to thank the organisers for this positive contribution to our industry”
Magnus Gery, Consultant for Danish Marine Group
“Considering that it was the first time around for the SMM in Istanbul, the fair was fine and well visited. If the SMM organisation builds on the year’s results I am certain that we will participate in 2011.”
Turgut Pamuk, Noske-Kaeser (HATKO Group)
“The quality of both exhibitors and visitors was good. SMM Istanbul is a very important event for us, to strengthen our profile with clients. That is why we want to be there again next time. The conference dealt with really important and useful issues”.

"As one of the first Turkish Exhibitor in SMM Hamburg which is the world leading event of the market, and exhibiting at SMM since years, we are very glad to have SMM Istanbul version in Turkey and we believe that this new event will bring prestige and importance to the placement of our growing market into the region."
Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, Chairman of VDMA German Engineering Federation - Section Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries
“Turkey is growing strongly in its importance for the German and European marine equipment industry, and that makes local involvement more and important. Istanbul is also a crystallisation point of Turkish shipping, attracting a lot of interest from the shipbuilding industries in South-East Europe and the Near and Middle East.”
The lively cultural city of Istanbul
The venue for the SMM Istanbul is the ICEC (International Convention & Exhibition Centre), which enjoys a very central location, in sight of the tourist attractions of the city. That gives ideal opportunities for an extended excursion to see the sights of this unique cultural metropolis, which spans two continents. The peninsula has a wealth of historic sites at this meeting place for the philosophies and cultures of East and West. Such as the Hagia Sophia, ("Holy Wisdom"), which was originally constructed as a church in the sixth century, subsequently used as a mosque, and is now a museum; the Süleymaniye Mosque, build on the order of Suleiman the Magnificent in the mid 16th century; the Topkapı Palace, which for centuries was the administrative centre of the Ottoman Empire and residence and seat of government of the Sultans; and the Galata Tower, which gives magnificent views over the roofs of Istanbul.
Istanbul is home to a wide range of international cultural and political organisations and institutions, which hold many meetings and conventions there.
The historic part of the city was inscribed by UNESCO in 1985 in its list of world cultural heritage sites, and Istanbul was recently chosen as the 2010 European Capital of Cultural.
